On screen
Ericsson's Monitor Being Built in Record Time Greeptown, L. I.—News from the yards where the Monitor is being built under the direction of Mr. John Ericsson, report that it will soon be launched. Considerable mystery surrounds the construction of the new vessel that is said to be constructed on an entirely new principle. Nothing is spared to put the ship to sea at the earliest possible moment in an effort to stem the depredations of the Confederate operations. News of new victories from the South spur on the workers to greater speed, though the wisdom of such a daring departure in construction under which it is removed, the Monitor is being built is questioned and often ridiculed.
Interpretation
Model opinion, not evidence: mood: urgent and dramatic; themes: wartime urgency, technological innovation, media representation; style notes: static frame of printed text with high-contrast lighting; no camera movement; documentary-style presentation

A newspaper clipping is shown with text about the construction of Ericsson's Monitor, described as a new vessel under construction to counter a Confederate threat. A voiceover at 31:51 shouts 'All together, men, ram our homes!'

“All together, men, ram our homes!” 31:51 automatic transcript, may be wrong

The record

No renewal found An automated finding, not a verdict. A renewal would have appeared in the Copyright Office's renewal registrations 27 to 29 years after the term began. Those volumes are loaded and our parse of them found no matching renewal. If that is right, a work published 1931–1963 that was not renewed entered the public domain at the end of its 28th year; the volumes are OCR of old print, and the method page reports how often the parse has been found to miss one. Evidence dossier. The finding concerns the US copyright record for the film; it is not clearance for any use, and this page's annotation is machine output.
